Several 4-place model owners have reported movement in the pitch trim tab linkages at the front bushing. One of the higher time Bearhawk owners has reported significant play and concern about possible catastrophic consequences if not addressed. Another high time Bearhawk owner has reported installing rod-end bearings at the front of the push-rods, successfully eliminating play at that hinge point. I chose to apply the same fix on my own Bearhawk.
The original kit-sets had a rod-end bearing at the aft end of the push-rod, but a plain bushing at the front end. This bushing tends to chatter and wear, eventually elongating the hole, leading to more wear.
The plans now show a rod end bearing at both ends. All kitsets are now now being supplied with Rod-End Bearings at both ends of the push rod. They are also available for sale from the factory.
On Bearhawks with a bushing at the front of the trim push-rod, replacing it with a rod-end bearing appears to be a good long term solution and is a relatively simple fix.
This item originally featured in the maintenance pages, but due to it's potential significance has now been moved to the safety pages.
